“I would like to thank you, most sincerely for taking time to listen to my complaint against Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) for delaying my appointment letter for the post of Artisan Electrical Engineering. It was great to meet and work with your team.” These were the words of Rama Mwazondo in an appreciation letter to the Commission.
Mr Mwazondo lodged a complaint with the Commission’s Mombasa Regional Office alleging unfair treatment and discrimination on account of disability by KPA. According to him, he submitted his application for the position of Artisan- Electrical Engineering- Grade HG3 Seg.3 in June 2016. Upon being shortlisted, he attended the interview and was issued with a letter of offer dated 1st September 2017 for his acceptance which he signed and returned a copy to the Human Resource office, KPA.
He was subsequently referred to Bandari clinic for medical examination prior to reporting on duty. However, he was not issued with an appointment letter and upon follow up, he was verbally informed that he had been disqualified ostensibly for lack of a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education. This prompted him to report to the National Council for Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD) which addressed the KPA management through a letter dated 23rd April 2019. This too did not elicit any remedial action which compelled him to seek the Commission’s intervention.
The Commission by way of inquiry took up the matter with the management of KPA leading to issuance of Mr Mwazondo’s appointment letter. Mr Mwazondo in a letter to the Commission on 16th November 2021 informed the Commission that KPA issued him with a letter of appointment effective 5th November 2021 and appreciated our intervention thereof.
“I am glad to inform you that KPA has today issued me with an appointment letter for the post of assistant mechanic, with effect from 5th November 2021. Your help and support during this time is greatly appreciated,” said Mr Mwazondo.
