“I am supposed to start my classes on 21st September 2020 and I am required to provide my passport details for the university application and the pre-enrolment process. I have made several trips to Nyayo House (Immigration Department) but it has not borne fruits. Every time I am chased away or told to come next week.” These are the words of Mr. Calvin Ateka in a 5th August, 2020, email to the Commission.
According to Mr. Ateka, a prospective student of a foreign university, he applied for a passport in May, 2020, to enable him secure a scholarship and to facilitate the pre-enrolment process. However, he risked missing the university slot and by extension the scholarship due to the delay by the Immigration Department to process his passport. The frustration and the unresponsiveness of the officers at the Department prompted him to lodge a complaint with the Commission.
The Commission by way of inquiry took up the matter with the Director, Immigration and Registration of Persons leading to the processing of his passport. In a letter to the Commission, Mr. Ateka confirmed that he had been issued with the passport and thanked the Commission for the speedy intervention.
