On 6th February, 2020, the Commission received a complaint from Eldoret Grains Limited, one of the leading cereal millers, alleging discrimination and frequent harassment by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
The particulars of the complaint are that by a letter dated 27th January, 2020, KEBS suspended the company’s permit and directed it to stop any further production of its products and recall all its maize meal brands from the market. The miller’s directors alleged that they were being discriminated by KEBS as the company had already implemented a corrective action and plan recommended by KEBs following an earlier suspension in November, 2019. They claimed that they had complied by purchasing and installing an aflatoxin testing machine at their factories.
On 7th February, 2019, the Commission convened a meeting between KEBs officials and the directors of the company where the complaint was investigated and it was found that the company had indeed complied with the recommendations of KEBS. As a consequence, the suspension of permit was lifted and the company’s maize products reinstated to the market.
