Imagine waiting for six years to be compensated for injuries at work place? That is what Peter Muindi has had to contend with following inordinate delay by East Africa Portland Cement Company Limited to compensate him for injuries he sustained at work in July 2013. According to Mr. Muindi, he got injured at the coal shade where his left knee patella got fractured leaving him with a permanent disability.
After treatment at the Mater Hospital, he submitted his claim for compensation in December 2013 and the company advised him to appear before a consultant surgeon for medical assessment. The surgeon in his report confirmed that he had suffered a permanent disability at 12%. He waited and waited. A year passed. Another still passed but there was no money from the company hitting his account, prompting him to lodge a complaint with the Commission.
The Commission by way of inquiry took up the matter immediately with the company leading to payment of KSh. 315,062 owed to him. Mr. Muindi, in an email to the Commission on 20th September 2019 was grateful for the Commission’s intervention.
“Finally Portland Cement has paid my claim at Ksh 315,062 and I would like to thank your effort in resolving the matter,” he wrote.
