A name change was finally effected and a new birth certificate issued following the intervention of the Commission.
According to Mr. Paul Mathuva, his family undertook adoption proceedings for Edwin Karama and were formally issued with a birth certificate in the name of King Munene Mutemi on 25th January 2017. However, they later used the birth certificate to register the child in the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS), but the original name, Edwin Karama, appeared instead of the new name, King Munene Mutemi. This was occasioned by the failure by the Civil Registry to update the new name leading to the reappearing of his old name.
They made an application to the Civil Registry to have the name updated to enable them register the child in the NEMIS but the Registry was unresponsive impelling them to lodge a complaint with the Commission through Njoroge and Katisya Advocates.
The Commission by way of inquiry took up the matter with the Civil Registration Directorate on 13th August 2019 leading to the name being updated and subsequent issuance of a new birth certificate.
