The Chairperson of the Commission and the Secretary General of the African Ombudsman and Mediators Association (AOMA), Hon. Florence Kajuju has urged other Ombudsmen to deepen their commitment and support the decentralisation of the operations of AOMA which is the goal and philosophy behind the Association’s regional meetings.
Speaking Tuesday August 6, 2019 at the first AOMA Southern Africa regional meeting held in Botswana, Hon. Kajuju noted that the association has a role to play in the advancement and development of the Ombudsman institution in Africa in furtherance of good governance, the rule of law and human rights.
The two-day meeting being held under the theme “Re-energising the Institution in Southern Africa” provides an opportunity for the Ombudsmen to reflect on the operations and the work of the Ombudsman institutions, particularly in the Southern African Development Community region and to explore ways of strengthening the ombudsman institution in Africa and navigating common challenges as well as mitigating emerging threats such as the disregard of the independence and autonomy of Ombudsman institutions, particularly with the change of political regimes, the breach of the protection from personal liability of the Ombudsman among, other challenges.
